If you’re looking to transform an extrusion into a seamless ring or piece, the ideal solution is to have it molded. Molding the ends together guarantees a strong seal and maximum durability at the joint. However, molding may not always be an option and in those cases, splicing is a great alternative.
When using the splice method, there are a few general guidelines to keep in mind to make your project successful.
1. Make a Straight Cut

The cut needs to be smooth and straight down so that when you join ends together, all edges will match up. The best tool to use when cutting dense and sponge extrusions is a utility cutter. Additionally, the ends need to be clean and free of all debris. If needed, clean with an alcohol pad before gluing. Working on a flat surface makes the cutting process easier.
2. Choosing the Right Glue

When gluing rubber seals together, there’s no better option than Loctite 495. This is a transparent, low viscosity, general purpose instant adhesive designed to bond materials like rubber, plastic, and metal together. Using Loctite will ensure the ends are permanently bonded together, creating a seamless one-piece extrusion.
3. Gluing the Right Way

Like any other adhesive, less is more! Instead of putting the glue directly onto your seal, squeeze some onto an alternative surface and use a paperclip to apply it to one of the rubber ends. You’ll only need a small amount of glue, enough to coat the entire exposed face of the rubber. This method controls how much glue is applied and where it goes. If there’s too much adhesive, it will not hold well.
Loctite 495 works extremely fast! Once you join the ends, the bonding will start immediately, but it’s best to hold the ends together for about 90 seconds. At this point, the seal should already be watertight. However, we recommend letting the glue fully cure for 24 hours before installing the new custom extrusion.
