When you’re doing any kind of weatherstripping project, especially a custom project, there’s a good chance you’ll encounter mitering. Mitering is a fancy term for cutting two pieces of weatherstripping and joining them together at a 90-degree angle, like the border of a picture frame.
We’re very familiar with this process and have compiled our top 5 tips for mitering to ensure you achieve a seamless and leak-proof corner.
Tip #1: To ensure precise cuts, use a 90-degree angle template and a silver pen to outline where the weatherstrip needs to be cut. As long as you can cut on the lines, you’re good to go!

Tip #2: For the smoothest cut, use a straight razor blade or mitering scissors. The sharper the blade, the cleaner the cut.

Tip #3: Avoid cutting all the way through the weatherstrip if possible. Instead, gently bend the weatherstrip at the corner joint, align the two sides, and then apply glue to create a strong bond. This technique creates continuous seal that wraps around the entire outer edge.

Tip #4: For the best results, we recommend using Loctite 495. This adhesive is specifically designed for rubber-to-rubber applications and creates an immediate, high-strength bond.

Tip #5: To create a uniform glass gasket, use a template or a piece of wood or metal to align the rubber ends when gluing. This method guarantees an even gap for your glass and ensures perfect alignment for a seamless finish.

Bonus tip: It’s always a good idea to have some extra material on hand to do a trial run. This way, you can perfect your technique before cutting and gluing your weatherstrip.
